Cyprus – Backlog of Court Cases Reduced
On Monday, 11 November 2024, during the budget discussion of the judicial service before the House Finance Committee, the President of the Supreme Court Katerina Stamatiou informed the House of Representatives that the backlog of cases in Cyprus Courts was reduced by more than double the percentage required by the Republic’s obligation under the EU Recovery and Resilience Plan.
The President of the Supreme Court also stated that Cyprus has pledged to resolve 20% of civil cases and Appeals pending for over two years by the end of the first half of 2024 and 40% by the end of the first half of 2026. To achieve this, an action plan has been implemented.
Further the President of the Supreme Court explained that by the end of September, cases registered up to December 31, 2018, had decreased by 57%, while cases registered between January 1, 2019, and June 30, 2022, had decreased by 30%. She also informed the MPs that the total clearance rate of cases registered until June 30, 2022, considered backlog cases, stands at 42%.
In our opinion these are positive news showing that significant progress has been done in order to reduce the backlog of Court cases.
As a law firm in Cyprus, we do understand the challenges and we welcome these developments.
